Indian Prime Minister hands over G20 Presidency to Brazilian President

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared the 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi closed and handed over the G20 Presidency hammer to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

On September 10, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi to close and handed over the G20 Presidency hammer to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Speaking as he handed over the G20 Presidency to Brazil, Prime Minister Modi said: “I congratulate PresidentBraziland also my friend Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva." Prime Minister Modi also sent his best wishes to Brazil on its G20 Presidency.

Brazil will officially assume the G20 Presidency for one year, starting on December 1, 2023.

For his part, Brazilian President Lula congratulated Prime Minister Modi for "effectively leading the G20 and playing an outstanding role at this Summit."

He called for increased representation of developing countries in the United Nations Security Council as permanent and non-permanent members of the body. “We want greater representation of emerging countries in the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund,” the Brazilian president said.

According to President Lula, Brazil's G20 Presidency has three priorities. The first is social inclusion and the fight against hunger; the second is energy transition and sustainable development... the third is reforming global governance institutions. All of these priorities are included in Brazil's G20 Presidency motto: "building a just world and a sustainable planet."

At the end of the closing ceremony, Prime Minister Modi proposed to hold a virtual G20 meeting at the end of November. He said: “At the next meeting, we can review the contents that have been decided in this Summit. I hope all of you will connect in the next virtual meeting...”.
