Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong returned to the village on the afternoon of September 13, reporting that she and her two children were safe after 4 days of being isolated by floodwaters, reducing the number of missing people after the flash flood to 36.
Ms. Hong returned alone, went straight to the Rescue Command Center located at the Lang Nu Cultural House, Phuc Khanh Commune (Bao Yen District) to report the news to the authorities. She said that her daughter Hoang Thi Hiep, 16 years old, is currently looking after her uncle in Bao Yen, and her son Hoang Trung Nguyen, 14 years old, has been left at his workplace in Yen Bai.
The 33-year-old woman, who works as a hired hand in Yen Bai City, was isolated by floodwaters and had no phone signal, so she did not know about the disaster that had occurred in her village in the early morning of September 10. Her mother and her three children were on the missing list recorded by the government. Yesterday afternoon, the floodwaters receded, and she called home to learn that her parents and siblings were safe, that some relatives in the village were being treated at the hospital, and that their houses were buried. This morning, she hitched a ride with a charity group to return to her village.
"As long as there are people, there are possessions," she said, feeling lucky even though she no longer has a home.
This morning, two households of Mr. Hoang Van Tien and Mr. Hoang Van Tuan, each with four people on the missing list, also reported that they were safe. Eight people escaped the flash flood at 6am on September 10th because they went to visit their father nearby.
As of 4:00 p.m. this afternoon, Lang Nu recorded 54 people safe, 17 injured people being treated, 48 dead and 36 people still missing.
Yesterday, 115 people from Kho Vang village, Coc Lau commune, Bac Ha district, who were "suspected missing" were found on the mountain. Previously, on September 9, they discovered the risk of a landslide and called each other to run to a mountain about a kilometer away to take shelter. At night, it rained heavily, and rocks and soil began to fall, burying 7 of their houses in the village. The local authorities could not contact them (because they were on the mountain without a phone signal), so they were initially determined to be "missing due to a landslide".
Lao Cai province recorded 104 deaths and 76 missing people due to the impact of storm No. 3.
