Hong Phong Commune Farmers' Association guides people to classify waste at source

The construction of environmental protection models has brought practical results to Thanh Mien district.

Build multiple point models

According to Mr. Hoang Thanh Manh, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Hong Phong Commune, previously most households in the commune did not pay attention to sorting waste at source. Therefore, the collection and treatment of waste encountered many difficulties, even causing environmental pollution.

To raise awareness among the people, the Commune Farmers’ Association has built a model of “Classifying household waste to make organic fertilizer” in 135 households, spread across 7 villages. Households will classify waste into 3 types: organic waste, recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste. Organic waste will be composted with biological products to make fertilizer. The commune will collect non-recyclable waste for treatment.

"We have proactively promoted the benefits of waste sorting at source so that people can understand clearly. At the same time, we have supported the cost of buying waste sorting tanks, waste treatment, biological products... so we have attracted a large number of people to participate. The amount of waste released into the environment has decreased by about 40% compared to before," said Mr. Manh.

Currently, the above model is being replicated by the District Farmers' Association in Tan Trao and Doan Ket communes with over 100 participating households.

Since the beginning of the year, Tu Cuong commune has established 354 self-management groups with nearly 600 members. The core force of the self-management groups are cadres, party members, union members, and members of departments, branches, and organizations... The members of the group have the task of propagating and mobilizing people to participate in the model, join hands to protect the environment, and develop the "clean from home to alley" movement... Organize the cleaning of village roads and alleys, clear bushes, and take care of trees periodically once a week.

"In the process of building advanced new rural areas, Tu Cuong always focuses on environmental criteria. To carry out this task well, organizations have mobilized people to participate in building self-management groups for environmental sanitation. Up to now, 100% of households have signed a commitment to join hands to protect the environment, proactively collect and classify waste and change living habits that affect the environment," said Mr. Vu Van Thuy, Chairman of Tu Cuong Commune People's Committee.

Thanks to its effective operation, the environmental sanitation self-management team has been replicated throughout the district. To date, the district has established 1,630 teams, attracting nearly 20,000 participants.

Practical effectiveness

In order to carry out the breakthrough work of Thanh Mien district, in early 2023, the district Women's Union launched the movement "collecting scrap and plastic waste to raise funds to support women and children in especially difficult circumstances". The movement has spread to 100% of the union bases, attracting about 1,000 members to participate. Since the beginning of the year, the Women's Union at all levels in the district has organized 190 environmental cleaning campaigns with the participation of 3,800 people. 150 km of village roads, alleys, and ditches were cleaned; more than 5,000 trees were planted. From the above activities, the union at all levels has collected tons of scrap, sold for nearly 60 million VND to support women and children in difficult circumstances.

"We also built a model of "homemade IMO microorganisms" to classify and treat organic waste at home. Up to now, communes and towns have actively promoted how to make IMO products at home and more than 200 households have effectively implemented it. The district also supported the provision of more than 1,000 trash bins to households, agencies and businesses in the area," said Ms. Giang Thi Thia, Chairwoman of the District Women's Union.

Mr. Dao Ngoc Phong, Chairman of the Thanh Mien District Fatherland Front Committee, said that in the coming time, the district will continue to strengthen leadership and direction, closely coordinate between units to raise awareness and responsibility of people in environmental protection. In addition, promote socialization, mobilize all resources for environmental protection. Continue to maintain and replicate effective environmental protection models.

After more than 9 months of implementing breakthrough work on environmental sanitation, the whole district has 306 roads assigned to political and social organizations to manage and ensure environmental sanitation. 52 bright - green - clean - beautiful landscape highlights have been built in communes and towns. Localities have invested in purchasing trash bins placed on main roads, averaging 3-5 households/bin. 148 environmental sanitation teams operate effectively and responsibly; the frequency of waste collection has increased from 2 times/week to 3 times/week. Some localities have paid attention to the remuneration regime for garbage collectors such as: Doan Tung commune 8 million VND/person/month; Tu O village, Tan Trao commune 6 million VND/person/month. 100% of environmental sanitation models operate effectively, attracting a large number of people to participate. Most households and businesses have signed a commitment to join hands with local authorities to protect the environment.
