According to SCMP, the information was written by a Suez Canal service company. It is not yet clear whether traffic on the canal will be affected.

Specifically, Leth Agencies said the ship, named MV Glory, was carrying more than 65,000 tons of corn from Ukraine to China. The ship ran aground near the city of Qantara, in Ismailia province. Tugboats in the canal are trying to rescue the ship.

Canal officials did not have details on what caused the ship to run aground. Several areas of Egypt, including the northern provinces, experienced bad weather on January 8.

Satellite tracking data analyzed by the Associated Press showed the MV Glory sailing in a single lane of the Suez Canal, just south of Port Said in the Mediterranean Sea.

A spokesman for the canal authority declined to comment, saying a statement would be released soon.

This is not the first ship to run aground in the vital waterway. In March 2021, the giant Panama-flagged container ship Ever Given crashed into a bank in a single-lane section of the canal, blocking the waterway for six days.

The Ever Given was freed in a massive operation involving a flotilla of tugboats. The grounding has caused a massive blockage that is costing global trade $9 billion a day and straining supply chains already strained by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MV Glory was inspected by the Joint Coordination Center off Istanbul on January 3. The center is staffed by Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian and United Nations personnel.

Opened in 1869, the Suez Canal is a vital shipping route for oil, natural gas and goods. It also remains one of Egypt's top foreign exchange earners.

In 2015, the government of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi completed an expansion of the canal, allowing it to accommodate the world's largest ships.

The Glory is 225 meters long. It is unclear whether the ship is stuck in the canal like the Ever Given, as that would complicate the rescue of the ship.
