Schools in Syria have reopened, marking the first positive sign of stability in the Middle Eastern country a week after President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown.

At a boys’ high school in the capital Damascus, school board representative Raed Nasser said all preparations had been made to ensure the safe return of students. Although schools were open across the country on the first day of the week in most Arab countries, some areas were still badly affected, leaving many families hesitant to send their children to school.

Syria resumes school teaching as the country continues to transition to democracy.

On the same day, December 15, the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, called for the lifting of international sanctions to create conditions for this Middle Eastern country to restore its economy and rebuild, promote national reconciliation and build lasting peace.

Syria's economy is in ruins, many cities are destroyed, while millions of refugees still live in makeshift camps in neighboring countries.
