The death toll from the earthquake in Hualien County, Taiwan (China) has risen to 16 and ground displacement has occurred.
According to the latest statistics from the Taiwan government's Disaster Response Center, as of the evening of April 10, the earthquake had killed 16 people, injured 1,155 people and 3 people were still missing.
The government's Geodetic Center of Taiwan used satellite measurement data to calculate changes before and after the earthquake at a base station near the epicenter and found that there was surface displacement. The results showed that the maximum surface elevation in Hualien was about 45.1 cm and the horizontal displacement was about 8.1 cm. The maximum horizontal displacement was 22.2 cm at the East Coast Scenic Area Management Station in Taitung County, which was raised about 35.6 cm. Displacement also occurred in other areas of Taiwan, with displacements of about 1-4 cm in the north, 1-6 cm in the west, and 1-2 cm in the south.
Rescuers found three more bodies on a trail in a Hualien park on April 10. They were members of a family of five who had lost contact, Taiwanese media reported. Two bodies were discovered earlier that day.
After the strong earthquake in Hualien, more than 800 large and small aftershocks occurred, many people occasionally felt tremors after they returned to work and school after the Qingming Festival holiday.
According to statistics from Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture, as of April 10, the earthquake had caused a total of NT$80.96 million (about US$2.5 million) in damage to agricultural products, private and public facilities, with Hualien County suffering severe damage.
