This is the result of a new United Nations report on global food crises.

According to the Secretary GeneralUnited NationsAntonio Guterres said it was unacceptable that more than 250 million people were facing emergency levels of hunger, many at risk of starvation. He said the report reflected a humanitarian setback as the world struggled to make progress towards ending hunger and achieving food security and improved nutrition for all.

According to the report ofUnited Nations, more than 40% of people in urgent need of food live in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Yemen. In 2021, the world had 193 million people in emergency food insecurity concentrated in 53 countries and territories. By 2022, the number of people in this category increased to 258 million, spread across 58 countries and territories. 2022 is also the fourth consecutive year that the above figures have increased.

Conflicts and mass displacement continue to be the main drivers of global hunger. Rising poverty, deepening inequality, stunted development, the climate crisis and natural disasters also contribute to food insecurity, said Antonio Guterres.
