Jannik Sinner had an incredible comeback victory over Medvedev in the final of the 2024 Australian Open to win the first Grand Slam title of his career.
Jannik Sinner has become the 2024 Australian Open champion after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the much-anticipated final.
After 3 hours and 45 minutes of intense competition, Sinner had an unbelievable comeback with a score of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3 against Medvedev.
This victory helped the 22-year-old tennis player win the first prestigious Grand Slam title of his career. Notably, this was also Sinner's first final match in a tournament in the Grand Slam system.
Jannik Sinner also made history by becoming the first Italian player to win the Australian Open.
The championship belongs to Jannik Sinner, who is completely deserving of it, as he has shown impressive form since the beginning of the tournament, including overthrowing record holder Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.
Jannik Sinner was the outstanding player who stopped Djokovic's 2,195-day losing streak at the Australian Open and turned his opponent into a former champion.
As for Daniil Medvedev, he had a huge advantage to win the title but in the end had to bitterly watch his opponent step onto the podium at the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.
This is also the third time in history that Daniil Medvedev has reached the final but has not been able to win the championship. In the previous two times, the Russian player lost to two tennis legends, Novak Djokovic (2021) and Rafael Nadal (2022).
In the final that just ended, Daniil Medvedev had a favorable start when he won a break point in the third game to lead Sinner 2-1.
The Russian maintained this advantage to take the lead before getting a second break in game 9 to close out set 1 with a 6-3 victory.
In set 2, Daniil Medvedev continued to dominate and continued to have a break point in Sinner's serve game to lead 3-1 after 4 games. Sinner then lost another break point in game 6, allowing his opponent to take a huge lead of 5-1.
With the gap in points so large, Sinner then won two consecutive points but still could not prevent Medvedev from winning 6-3.
After losing two sets, the Italian player fought back strongly in set 3. He created an equal game with his opponent, before successfully breaking Medvedev's serve (game 10) to win 6-4.
In set 4, the scenario played out the same as the previous set when the two players created a balanced match, creating an exciting 4-4 chase after 4 games.
However, in the 10th game, Sinner once again had an important break point to win 6-4, thereby equalizing the score 2-2 after 4 sets and forcing Medvedev to enter set 5.
Losing two consecutive sets and letting his opponent tie, Daniil Medvedev entered the deciding set with less physical strength than he had before.
The Russian player could only create a balanced match in the first 4 games (2-2 draw), before losing an important break point in game 6 to let his opponent take the lead 4-2.
With this advantage, Sinner did not miss the opportunity when he firmly held his serve to maintain the distance and ended the set with a score of 6-3.
In the end, Jannik Sinner won an unbelievable comeback 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3 to win the 2024 Australian Open championship.
Earlier, in the women's singles event, Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her Australian Open title after defeating 12th seed Zheng Qinwen of China 6-3, 6-2 in a 76-minute final.
The result made Sabalenka the first woman to defend her maiden Grand Slam title since Victoria Azarenka beat Li Na in the 2013 Australian Open final.
Notably, she is also the first female player to successfully defend her Australian Open title since Azarenka that year.
