Singapore closed beaches on its southern island of Sentosa on June 15 due to an oil spill from a nearby pier.
The island government’s website states that Tanjong, Palawan and Siloso beaches are closed for cleaning, and that swimming or other activities are prohibited at these locations. Signs have also been posted on the beaches stating that an oil spill has been detected and asking people to avoid the waters.
Oil spilled from Pasir Panjang Pier, less than 10km from the popular tourist island of Sentossa. The incident occurred on the afternoon of June 14 when a Dutch-flagged dredging vessel collided with a Singapore-flagged oil tanker that was anchored. Port authorities said that oil was discovered spilling from the tanker into the sea that evening. Authorities immediately isolated the ship and brought the oil spill under control.
