Regulations on the validity of driving licenses

Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety No. 36/2024/QH15 dated June 27, 2024, effective from January 1, 2025, stipulates the validity period of a driving license.

Duration of driving license:

+ Driver's licenseA1, A, B1 class without time limit;

+ Driving licenseClass B and Class C1limited time10 yearsfrom the date of issue;

+ Driver's licenseClass C, D1, D2, D, BE, C1E, CE, D1E, D2E and DElimited time5 yearsfrom the date of issue.

Driving licenses valid within the territory of Vietnam include:

+ Driving license issued by a competent authority of Vietnam;

+ International driving license and national driving license appropriate to the type of vehicle allowed to be driven issued by a country that is a member of the 1968 United Nations Convention on Road Traffic (hereinafter referred to as the Vienna Convention);

+ Driving license appropriate to the type of vehicle allowed to be driven in the country or territory with which Vietnam has signed an international treaty or international agreement to recognize each other's driving licenses;

+ Foreign driving license suitable for the type of vehicle allowed to be driven issued by a country recognized under international treaties to which the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a member.

A driving license is invalid in the following cases:

+ Driver's license expired;

+ Driving license is revoked according to the provisions of Clause 5, Article 62 of this Law.

+Class A1issued to drivers of two-wheeled motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of up to 125 cm³or with an electric motor power of up to 11 kW;

+Class Aissued to drivers of two-wheeled motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of over 125 cm³or have an electric motor capacity of over 11 kW and the types of vehicles specified for class A1 driving license;

+Class B1Issue to drivers of three-wheeled motorbikes and other types of vehicles specified for class A1 driving license;

+Class BIssued to drivers of passenger cars with up to 8 seats (excluding the driver's seat); trucks and special-purpose cars with a total designed weight of up to 3,500 kg; types of cars specified for class B driving licenses pulling trailers with a total designed weight of up to 750 kg;

+Class C1Issued to drivers of trucks and specialized vehicles with a total designed weight of over 3,500 kg to 7,500 kg; types of trucks specified for class C1 driving license pulling trailers with a total designed weight of up to 750 kg; types of vehicles specified for class B driving license;

+Class Cissued to drivers of trucks and special-purpose vehicles with a total designed weight of over 7,500 kg; types of trucks specified for class C driving licenses pulling trailers with a total designed weight of up to 750 kg; types of vehicles specified for class B and class C1 driving licenses;

+Class D1Issued to drivers of passenger cars with more than 8 seats (excluding the driver's seat) to 16 seats (excluding the driver's seat); passenger cars specified for class D1 driving license pulling trailers with a total designed weight of up to 750 kg; vehicles specified for class B, C1, C driving licenses;

+Class D2Issued to drivers of passenger cars (including buses) with more than 16 seats (excluding the driver's seat) to 29 seats (excluding the driver's seat); passenger cars specified for class D2 driving license pulling trailers with a total designed weight of up to 750 kg; vehicles specified for class B, C1, C, D1 driving licenses;

+Class DIssued to drivers of passenger cars (including buses) with more than 29 seats (excluding the driver's seat); sleeper cars; passenger cars specified for class D driving licenses pulling trailers with a total designed weight of up to 750 kg; vehicles specified for class B, C1, C, D1, D2 driving licenses;

+BE ClassIssue to drivers of types of cars specified for class B driving licenses pulling trailers with a total design weight of over 750 kg;

+Class C1EIssue to drivers of types of cars specified for class C1 driving licenses pulling trailers with a total design weight of over 750 kg;

+ Class CE is granted to drivers of types of cars specified for class C driving licenses pulling trailers with a total designed weight of over 750 kg; tractors pulling semi-trailers;

+Class D1EIssue to drivers of types of cars specified for class D1 driving licenses pulling trailers with a total design weight of over 750 kg;

+Class D2EIssue to drivers of types of cars specified for class D2 driving licenses pulling trailers with a total design weight of over 750 kg;

+DE ClassIssue to drivers of types of cars specified for class D driving licenses pulling trailers with a total design weight of over 750 kg; passenger cars with attached carriages.
