On the night of May 29, the British Parliament was dissolved, paving the way for a general election on July 4.

According to the election plan, the 5-week campaign period officially began at 11:01 p.m. on May 29 (GMT, or 6:01 a.m. on May 30, Vietnam time).

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has set the date for the general election to be July 4 instead of the end of the year as predicted by analysts.

This is seen as an effort to regain momentum for his ruling Conservative Party, which is "slipping" in opinion polls.

Meanwhile, the opposition Labour Party, led by former lawyer Keir Starmer, now has a chance to regain power after 14 years.

The ruling Conservative Party is also facing the risk of having to "say goodbye" to many MPs. Of the 129 MPs who have announced that they will not run for re-election, 77 are Conservative Party members.

This is an unprecedented number for a ruling party, posing many challenges for the Conservative Party in its efforts to gain a majority in the new Parliament.
