The number of smuggled cigarettes seized was 15,100 packs, the largest ever in Hai Duong city.
Hai Duong City Police said that the unit has just discovered and arrested a case of smuggled cigarettes in large quantities. The two subjects involved are Nguyen Hai Huy (born in 1978, in Hai Tan Ward, Hai Duong City) and Pham Van Loi (born in 1990, in Thanh Hong Commune, Thanh Ha District).
The evidence seized in the case was 15,100 packs of smuggled cigarettes with foreign writing. This is the largest quantity of smuggled cigarettes ever discovered and seized in Hai Duong City.
Previously, at around 0:10 a.m. on January 10, at the boarding house at 16F/207 Quang Trung, Binh Han Ward, Hai Duong City (where Loi was staying), the Working Group of the Economic and Drug Crime Investigation Police Team, Hai Duong City Police, in coordination with Binh Han Ward Police, caught Loi red-handed hiding the above smuggled cigarette packs.
Initial investigation results determined that Huy bought the cigarettes from a woman in Hung Yen and hid them in his rented room. Huy let Loi stay and manage the goods.
After importing cigarettes, Huy will deliver them to some stores and some retail buyers in Hai Duong city.
Huy confessed that from about June to October 2024, he had contacted and imported about 40 cartons of cigarettes many times with the intention of selling them for profit.
At the time of arrest, Huy and Loi could not present any documents proving the origin of the above goods.
The case is currently under further investigation.
