The French withdrawal was carried out according to an agenda announced by the Niger government under good security conditions. Local observers said France has more than 1,500 soldiers in Niger, stationed at locations in Ouallam, Ayorou (Tabarey-Barey) and Niamey.

France has begun withdrawing its troops from Niger at the request of the Nigerien Army, which carried out a coup in the West African country in July 2023. The first convoy of French troops stationed in the country began departing on October 10, escorted by the Nigerien Security and Defense Forces.

French President Emmanuel Macron initially rejected the coup forces in Niger’s demands for troops to withdraw, saying that only the government of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum had the authority to make such a request. However, in late September, the French leader announced that both the ambassador and the French military would return home.
