Hai Duong City People's Court has just held a first-instance trial of Phan Viet Anh (born in 2002, residing in Thanh Luong commune, Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province) for theft of property.
Having a previous conviction for theft, Viet Anh was unemployed and often wandered around with the intention of stealing to have money to spend. At 11:00 p.m. on October 12, 2024, Viet Anh went to the gate of house 6/23 Ho Dac Di, Thanh Binh ward (Hai Duong city) and saw a sports bike in the yard, so he climbed over the wall and lifted the bike out.
At around 1:00 a.m. on October 16, 2024, Thanh Binh Ward Police on patrol discovered Viet Anh wandering around with suspicious signs. Upon inspection, Viet Anh confessed to going to see if any house was open to steal property. At the police station, Viet Anh confessed to stealing the bicycle on the evening of October 12, 2024.
The investigation also discovered that Viet Anh stole two other sports bicycles with similar methods in Thanh Binh ward on September 30 and October 5, 2024. The total value of the stolen property was more than 9.7 million VND.
Viet Anh has a bad personal history, has a criminal record for theft; was administratively punished twice for theft; and was sent to a reform school once.
The court sentenced Phan Viet Anh to 1 year and 3 months in prison for theft of property.
