The Vietnamese sports delegation continued to receive good news when athlete Pham Thi Hue entered the Olympic rowing quarter-finals in the heavy single sculls event.
On the afternoon of July 27, athlete Pham Thi Hue finished in 4th place in lane 5, heavy single sculls. This result was enough to help Pham Thi Hue get a ticket to the play-off match on July 28.
At 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, July 28, Pham Thi Hue will compete in the same lane with athletes Joanie Delgaco (Philippines), Yariulvis Cobas Garcia (Cuba), Evidelia Gonzalez Jarquin (Nicaragua) and Akoko Komlanvi (Togo). These are all athletes who finished outside the top 3 in the qualifying round on the afternoon of July 27.
Facing easier opponents, Pham Thi Hue quickly took over the lead. The 34-year-old rower continuously chased Joanie Delgaco of the Philippines. After the first 1,000m, Delgaco temporarily took the lead with a time of 3 minutes 51.53 seconds, while Pham Thi Hue followed very closely with a time of 3 minutes 51.82 seconds. The gap between the two rowers was very close.
However, the age difference began to show clearly in the remaining 1,000m. Joanie Delgaco - an athlete 8 years younger than Pham Thi Hue - continuously accelerated and left Pham Thi Hue behind. However, the Vietnamese girl still maintained a fairly stable speed to increase the gap with Cuba's Cobas Garcia.
In the last 500m, Joanie Delgaco and Pham Thi Hue had far surpassed the pursuit of the remaining 3 boats, finishing first and second in lane 1 respectively.
In the end, Pham Thi Hue completed the 2,000m race with a time of 8 minutes 0.77 seconds, 3 seconds faster than her performance in yesterday's qualifying round.
She officially won a ticket to the quarterfinals of the women's heavyweight single sculls event at the Paris Olympics, taking place at 2:55 p.m. on July 29 (Vietnam time).
