Prolonged drizzle and humidity can easily cause harvested onions and garlic to sprout, reducing quality, making them difficult to sell, causing economic losses. Hai Duong farmers are busy preserving onions and garlic.

In the past few days, the Hai Duong area has continued to be cold, with drizzle all day, and high humidity while farmers, mainly in Nam Sach district and Kinh Mon town, have just finished harvesting the 2024 winter onion and garlic crop. The amount of onion and garlic transported from the fields to households for storage is very large. Drizzle and high humidity more or less cause some of the onions to become waterlogged.

Many families use tarpaulins to cover onions and garlic to prevent rainwater from seeping in, causing them to rot and sprout. In particular, farmers carefully preserve the amount of onions and garlic for the next crop, spraying them with pesticides to prevent rot, mold, and insects. When the sun comes up, these onions will be dried thoroughly before being moved to a cool, dry place for storage.

Dozens of onion processing and drying facilities in Nam Sach, Kim Thanh districts and Kinh Mon town are also operating at full capacity to handle the huge amount of fresh onions that have just been purchased from farmers. Most facilities have to hire additional local workers to speed up the progress at an average cost of 200,000 - 250,000 VND/person/day.

Each facility can dry an average of 6-7 tons of fresh onions per day, but there is still a lot of unprocessed and unprocessed goods. Professional agencies recommend that farmers or processing facilities should not leave onions and garlic in the rain for too long.

In the 2024 winter crop, Hai Duong will grow 6,760 hectares of onions and garlic, an increase of about 187 hectares compared to the 2023 winter crop, mainly concentrated in Kinh Mon (3,995 hectares), Nam Sach (1,614 hectares), Chi Linh (315 hectares), Kim Thanh (250 hectares), Hai Duong City (200 hectares). Favorable weather helps onions and garlic grow and develop well, with few pests and diseases, the total crop yield reaches about 119,820 tons, 10,922 tons higher than the previous year.

The price of fresh onions at the beginning of the season fluctuated from 20,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, then gradually decreased and remained around 17,000 - 18,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, farmers earned a profit of 6 - 12 million VND/sao. Most of the onions and garlic after harvest were consumed domestically, the rest were purchased and dried by purchasing facilities and sold to businesses producing instant noodles, instant porridge, etc. The amount of onions and garlic used to process into export products is available but not much.
