Many children hospitalized due to influenza A

On March 16, the Department of Infectious Diseases was treating 54 children, of whom more than 30 were infected with influenza A. According to doctors at Hai Duong Children's Hospital, at this time last year, only a few children with influenza had to be hospitalized for treatment.

In addition to the increase in the number of children with influenza A, the number of children with respiratory diseases has also increased during this time. On March 16, the Respiratory Department treated about 100 patients (accounting for 1/4 of the total number of patients being treated at the hospital). Children admitted to the hospital mainly suffered from pneumonia, bronchitis, etc.

According to Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Nhan, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases (Hai Duong Children's Hospital), the current weather is very favorable for viruses, especially influenza viruses, to develop. Usually, children with influenza will recover on their own after 3-5 days, without needing to be hospitalized, and fever-reducing medicine can be used at home. Families need to take good care of their children and avoid contact with too many people to limit the spread of pathogens to the community.

Doctor Nhan recommends that children with influenza causing pneumonia, respiratory failure, difficulty breathing, fatigue or influenza causing severe respiratory infections, high fever that does not go down or influenza in patients with certain chronic diseases should be hospitalized. If the child is well cared for and does not have a secondary infection, absolutely do not arbitrarily use antibiotics for the child to avoid antibiotic resistance.
