Two gold bars worth about 21 million won ($15,000) were discovered in a recycling bin at an apartment building in Seoul's Seocho district, South Korea.
The owner of the two gold bars has been identified, the Korea Times reported on July 5. The man said he had mistakenly thrown away the valuable item while sorting recyclables at home.
Earlier, on June 27, Worri Management, a residential management company, said that two 100-gram gold bars were found in a discarded CD player bag at the recycling area of the Banpo Xi apartment complex. The gold was valued at about 21 million won (US$15,000).
The next day, the Banpo Xi apartment building posted an online notice to find the owner of the two gold bars. This information quickly attracted the attention of the Korean public.
On July 1, a 70-year-old man living in the apartment building contacted the building management. He explained that while collecting recyclables at home, he accidentally threw away a bag containing two gold bars. Remarkably, he was unaware of the incident until he saw the notice.
Before the old man came to claim the gold, many people had pretended to be the owner of the gold. An official from Woori Management said, “From the beginning, we did not disclose the appearance of the gold bars, or other related details, which allowed us to verify the rightful owner through personal interviews and security camera images.”
