Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat surprised European newspapers when he won 3 rounds against the 3-time world champion boxer.
At the 2022 World Games, Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat created a stir when he brought home a gold medal for Vietnam in the Muay Thai category. On his journey to win the gold, Duy Nhat defeated a series of experts, including Rui Botelho of Portugal.
Rui Botelho is a 3-time world champion and 5-time European champion in Muay Thai and Kickoxing. The match with Botelho is considered a big challenge for Duy Nhat.
It must also be said that Duy Nhat had to lose weight to 57 kg to compete at the World Games and this caused difficulties for "The Invincible". Duy Nhat shared about losing weight: "It's been a long time since Nhat lost weight in the 57kg category. But at the 2022 World Games, there is no 60kg category, so Nhat had to lose weight, so he had to practice more and eat carefully. The advantage of losing weight is that I will compete with athletes 1 category smaller than me, but the difficulty is that my strength and speed will not be at their best."
Nearly 2 months after defeating Thailand's Chonlawit Preedasak in the 31st SEA Games final, Duy Nhat will face Rui Botelho in the US (July 15, 2022).
Entering the match with a strong opponent, Duy Nhat took cautious steps and prepared carefully. Rui Botelho attacked like a storm in the first round, but Duy Nhat defended firmly and responded with kicks, thereby winning 10-9.
In the second round, Duy Nhat launched quick high kicks to Rui Botelho's head and won with a score of 10-9.
In the final round, Duy Nhat maintained his strength, thereby winning absolutely with a total score of 30. Meanwhile, Rui Botelho only had a total score of 27.
Portuguese newspaper,Diario distributionwrote about this match: "Rui Botelho (57kg) met Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat, a Vietnamese boxer. The Vietnamese boxer won all 3 rounds against the Portuguese boxer with a score of 30-27".
In the semi-finals, Duy Nhat continued to show his strength when he defeated Ukrainian boxer Vladyslav Mykytas, the European champion, with a score of 29-28.
The next challenge came to Duy Nhat when he faced Kazakhstan's boxer, Almaz Sarsembekov in the final. However, the Vietnamese boxer performed excellently and won 29-28 to take the gold medal.
After winning the World Games gold medal, Duy Nhat shared: "I would like to sincerely thank the General Department of Sports and Physical Training of Vietnam for creating conditions for me to compete at the 2022 World Games. Thank you to the leaders of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City for always supporting and assisting me in my training and competition.
