Nguyen Thi Oanh missed out on a medal at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships

On the afternoon of July 12, Vietnamese athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh competed in the women's 1,500m race at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships. Against top Asian opponents, Nguyen Thi Oanh only finished 5th.

The best 1,500m performance of the athlete from Bac Giang is 4 minutes 13 seconds 88 set at the 2020 National Championship, the most recent is 4 minutes 16 seconds 85 at the 32nd SEA Games. After finishing this event, Nguyen Thi Oanh will compete in the remaining event of the tournament, the women's 3,000m obstacle race on July 14. Oanh's best performance in this event is 9 minutes 43 seconds 83 set at the 2018 ASIAD, the most recent is 10 minutes 34 seconds 37 at the 32nd SEA Games.

The 2023 Asian Athletics Championships will be held from July 12-16 at Suphachalasai Stadium in Thailand with more than 40 participating countries. The tournament will be considered for qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

At the 32nd SEA Games, Nguyen Thi Oanh won 4 gold medals, thereby reaching the milestone of 12 SEA Games gold medals in her career.

The athlete from Bac Giang became the second person in history to win 12 gold medals in athletics at the SEA Games, after her senior Nguyen Thi Huyen. As for Nguyen Thi Oanh, she also became the first Vietnamese athlete to win 4 individual gold medals in athletics at a SEA Games. The girl from Bac Giang had an impressive tournament when she won 4 gold medals in the 10,000 m, 1,500 m and 3,000 m steeplechase events.
