The US military shot down 12 drones, three anti-ship ballistic missiles and two surface-to-surface missiles launched by Houthi forces targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
The US Department of Defense announced on December 26 that its forces had shot down dozens of drones and missiles launched by Houthi forces in Yemen targeting commercial ships moving in the Red Sea.
In a post on social media, the US Department of Defense’s Central Command said there were no reports of damage or casualties to ships moving in the area. Specifically, over a period of 10 hours, the US military shot down 12 drones, three anti-ship ballistic missiles and two surface-to-surface missiles.
The statement came as the Houthis announced on the same day that they had launched a missile attack on a commercial ship in the Red Sea and a drone attack on southern Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on the same day that it had recorded multiple explosions near the port of Hodeida, on Yemen’s western coast. However, the transit ship and its crew were safe. The ship then continued its journey.
According to UKMTO, two other explosions also occurred near a ship also moving through Hodeida port.
On the same day, Egyptian media reported that explosions were also recorded in the coastal area of the country's Sinai Peninsula. The Israeli military later confirmed that it had intercepted several suspicious objects in the sky over the Red Sea that were heading towards the country.
Since the Gaza conflict began, Houthi forces have carried out more than 100 drone and missile attacks, targeting 10 commercial vessels involving 35 countries traveling in the Red Sea, according to the Pentagon.
