Statistics from local Chinese authorities show that as of the evening of July 4, floods and landslides caused by recent heavy rains in Jiangxi Province, eastern China, have affected over 1.56 million people.
According to the Jiangxi Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, 43 households lost their homes and nearly 161,000 hectares of farmland were flooded. The direct economic loss was estimated at 1.86 billion yuan (over 260 million US dollars).
On July 3, Chinese authorities launched a level IV emergency response to the floods in Jiangxi Province. The National Committee for Disaster Reduction dispatched a team to guide and assist local governments in carrying out relief and rescue work to ensure the basic needs of affected residents.
At the request of the Jiangxi provincial government, many state agencies have provided rescue equipment, with a total value of about 8.13 million yuan, to the province.
Due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain, water levels in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and lakes in the region are forecast to continue to rise, possibly reaching flood peaks. To support local flood response efforts, five working teams and four expert teams have been dispatched to Heilongjiang, Jiangxi, Anhui, Hubei, and Hunan provinces.
