At a regular press conference today, January 9, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said that one Vietnamese citizen died in a ferry capsize in the waters west of Seosan City, Chungcheong Province, South Korea on December 30, 2024.

"The Vietnamese Embassy in Korea has coordinated with local authorities and the labor dispatch company to inform the families, support funeral procedures for the victims, and is ready to take measures to support, protect, and ensure the full and legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens," said Ms. Hang.

South Korean media earlier reported that the Seohae Line ferry was carrying a 24-ton dump truck and an 11-ton crane when it capsized. The ferry, operated by a marine maintenance company, was transporting vehicles and cargo.

There were seven people on board the ferry at the time of the accident, including five South Koreans, one Vietnamese citizen and one believed to be of Chinese nationality. The South Korean Coast Guard rescued three people, including two South Koreans and one foreigner.

Based on witness testimony, South Korean investigators believe the ferry capsized after heavy equipment on the deck was pushed to one side. High waves had been reported in the area the day before, and local authorities had issued a warning about high waves in the area.
