Meta is planning to offer ad-free versions of Instagram or Facebook for $14/month to users in the European Union (EU).

Users can still use the free version but will have to accept personalized ads.

Meta plans to charge about 10 euros ($10.46) a month to use a Facebook or Instagram account on desktop and about 6 euros ($6.30) for each additional account. On mobile devices, the price will rise to nearly 13 euros ($13.60) as Meta adds in commissions paid to Apple and Google app stores.

Earlier this year, Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) said it had fined technology group Meta €390 million ($413 million) for breaching EU personal data laws on its social media platforms Facebook and Instagram. The DPC said Meta had breached its data transparency obligations under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and used an incorrect legal basis to process personal data for the purpose of targeting advertising based on users’ purchasing behavior.

A Meta spokesperson said the company believes in free services with personalized advertising, but is also looking at options to ensure compliance with growing regulatory requirements.

The New York Times first reported that Meta was considering offering a paid version to block ads on Facebook and Instagram for users living in the EU, but did not provide details on the fee.
