Meta said it will strengthen the scale and reliability of the "world's digital highway network by opening three oceanic corridors with the high-speed connectivity needed to drive AI innovation worldwide," Interesting Engineering reported on February 17.

According to Meta, artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing every aspect of life. Therefore, Meta wants to be at the forefront of promoting new technology. The Waterworth project will ensure that the benefits of AI and other emerging technologies are available to more people around the world.

Waterworth is the largest undersea cable project Meta has ever developed. The project will stretch over 50,000 km, longer than the circumference of the Earth (40,075 km). The cable network will connect 5 continents, making it the longest undersea cable project in the world, using the highest capacity technology available today.

Meta said the Waterworth project will provide superior connectivity to the US, India, Brazil, South Africa and many other key regions, facilitating stronger economic cooperation, promoting digital integration, and opening up opportunities for technology development in these regions.

Meta also plans to maximize cable installation in deep seas (7 km). They will use innovative burial techniques in high-risk fault areas such as shallow coastal waters, to avoid damage from ship anchors and other hazards.
