After several years of being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, this year's traditional festival of Nham Duong Pagoda (Kinh Mon, Hai Duong) will be held at the town level for 3 days on April 13, 14 and 15.
On the afternoon of March 25, the People's Committee of Kinh Mon town deployed a plan to organize the traditional festival of Nham Duong pagoda to commemorate the 320th anniversary of the day the National Master Dao Nam Thong Giac Thuy Nguyet entered nirvana (1704 - 2024).
After several years of being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, this year's festival will be held on a town scale for 3 days: April 13, 14 and 15 (ie March 5, 6 and 7 of the year of the Dragon).
The ceremony will reenact the ritual of carrying water from the ancient Nham Duong well to the pagoda to worship the ancestors; recite Buddha's name to pray for blessings; briefly announce the history of the Holy Ancestor Thuy Nguyet; offer incense in memory and the ritual of praying for national peace and prosperity.
The festival includes unique folk cultural activities such as folk singing; clay pot smashing games, catching eels in jars and an open chess tournament; displaying and introducing typical agricultural products of the town...
The first patriarch of the Cao Dong sect, Thuy Nguyet, was born in 1637 in Son Nam, present-day Thai Binh. After many years of monastic life, he traveled abroad to study Buddhism, was given the Dharma name Thong Giac Dao Nam Zen Master, and returned to Vietnam to spread the Dharma. Zen Master Thuy Nguyet traveled to many places such as Con Son, Quynh Lam, and Yen Tu pagodas to preach and save sentient beings. Later, the Zen Master became the abbot of Nham Duong pagoda.
In 1704, Zen Master Thuy Nguyet passed away in Thanh Hoa cave, behind Nham Duong pagoda. The pagoda still preserves the stupa containing his relics. He was conferred the title of Great Saint Dong Son Tue Nhan Tu Giac Quoc Su by the Le Dynasty King. The day of his death is taken as the opening day of Nham Duong pagoda festival, which takes place annually from the 5th to the 7th of the 3rd lunar month. Nham Duong pagoda is the birthplace of the Cao Dong Zen sect in Vietnam and is also the "largest archaeological museum in Vietnam".
In 2017, An Phu - Kinh Chu - Nham Duong was recognized as a special national relic complex. Nham Duong Pagoda is one of 20 relic sites in the dossier submitted to UNESCO to recognize the relic and landscape complex of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac as a world cultural heritage.
