The Pentagon said on November 28 that near-daily attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria have stopped since a ceasefire between Israel and the Islamic Hamas movement took effect last week.

Since mid-October, US forces in Iraq and Syria have been attacked by rockets and drones more than 70 times. “There have been no attacks on US forces in Iraq or Syria since November 23, when the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect,” Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said.

The increase in attacks on US forces is linked to the conflict between Israel and Hamas that erupted on October 7 after Hamas launched a series of rocket attacks on Israeli territory, killing around 1,200 people. Israel responded to the attack with a series of ground and air strikes on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, killing 15,000 people. This has caused a strong reaction in the Middle East and encouraged armed groups opposed to the US military presence in the region and its support for Israel to launch attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria.

A four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas brokered by Qatar went into effect on November 24, with Hamas releasing hostages and Israel freeing Palestinian prisoners. The truce has since been extended, and mediators are working to extend it further.
