Despite calling the lawsuits against its baby powder products "speculative and lacking scientific basis," Johnson & Johnson has offered to pay $8.9 billion to settle the lawsuits.

On April 4, the US pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson proposed to pay 8.9 billion USD to settle years of litigation related to allegations that its talcum powder products contain cancer-causing talc.
Johnson & JohnsonThe settlement, which must be approved by a US court, would fairly and effectively resolve all claims arising from lawsuits over talc, which is widely used in cosmetics, the court said.
The company said the $8.9 billion will be paid to thousands of plaintiffs involved in the cases over the past 25 years.
The company is currently facing thousands of lawsuits over its talc-based baby powder containing asbestos, which plaintiffs say causes ovarian cancer.
Johnson & Johnsonhas never admitted wrongdoing but announced that it had stopped selling talcum powder products identified as containing this powder ingredient in the US and Canada since May 2020.

Talc, a naturally occurring rock, contains asbestos, a possible carcinogen. It is used in thousands of cosmetic products such as baby powder, adult body and face powders, because of its ability to absorb moisture, helping to keep skin dry, smooth and soft. Since 2013, there have been thousands of lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson related to cancer that plaintiffs allege they developed after using some of the company's products. |
