At least 22 people have died after heavy rains caused severe flooding in the capital Kinshasa, authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo say.
Kinshasa Governor Daniel Bumba said the death toll could rise as search and rescue efforts continued. Emergency evacuations were underway in some of the worst-hit neighborhoods, backed by the military.
Flooding that struck early on April 5 paralyzed much of Kinshasa's infrastructure. Major roads were submerged, causing widespread power and water outages in several districts. The DRC's Ministry of Transport said there were severe disruptions on roads leading to N'djili International Airport, forcing authorities to deploy emergency ferry services to assist stranded passengers.
In the eastern suburb of Debonhomme, floodwaters from the rising N'djili River submerged dozens of vehicles. Many streets were flooded, making it difficult for people to travel.
Heavy rains are forecast to continue in the coming days, further damaging the city of 17 million people, which is already vulnerable to uncontrolled urbanization.
