On April 6, Iranian police announced the arrest of a senior leader of the self-proclaimed "Islamic State" (IS) organization and two members of this organization.
Mohammad Zaker, alias "Ramesh", and two other IS members were arrested in the city of Karaj, in Alborz province, west of the capital Tehran. Eight other people who were with the group were also detained.
IS claimed responsibility for two bombings in the Iranian city of Kerman in January 2024 that killed nearly 100 people and injured many others. The bombings targeted a memorial service for General Qasem Soleimani, a senior figure in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps who was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq in 2020. In January 2024, Iranian authorities arrested 35 people, including a leader of the Afghan branch of IS, ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K), who was believed to be involved in the bombings.
