According to the General Statistics Office, there are still 1.35 million young people aged 15-24 who are unemployed and not participating in education or training, accounting for 10.4% of the total number of young people in the country.
The General Statistics Office announced the labor and employment situation in the first quarter of 2025 on April 6, saying that the above figure increased by 84,400 people compared to the previous quarter and decreased by 66,900 compared to the same period last year. The rate of "two-zero" youth in rural areas is higher than in urban areas, 11.7% and 8.2% respectively; women 11.5% while men 9.3%.
The unemployment rate for young people of this age is 7.93%, which the General Statistics Office assessed as "a decrease compared to the previous quarter and the same period in 2024 but not significantly".
The labor and employment situation in the first three months of the year generally maintained the pattern of the quarter with Lunar New Year, when the labor force and unemployment rate both decreased compared to the fourth quarter of 2024 and increased compared to the same period last year. The labor force aged 15 and over reached 52.9 million, an increase of 532,000 people compared to the same period last year.
The number of employed workers is estimated at 51.9 million, a decrease of 234,000 people compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. By economic sector, the service sector accounts for the highest proportion of 40.7%, equivalent to 21.1 million employed people and an increase of nearly 0.6 million people compared to the same period last year; meanwhile, the remaining two sectors both decreased: industry and construction by 33.3%, equivalent to 17.3 million people; agriculture, forestry and fishery accounts for the lowest proportion of 26%, or 13.5 million people.
In the first quarter of 2025, the average income of workers improved, increasing by 131,000 VND (1.6%) compared to the previous quarter, reaching 8.3 million VND per month. The above income level increased by 720,000 VND compared to the same period last year. The average income of urban workers is nearly 1.4 times higher than that of rural areas, reaching 10.1 million compared to 7.2 million VND. This is the amount of wages or salaries, profits received by workers including overtime pay, bonuses, job allowances and other benefits in the month before the survey.
By socio-economic region, average labor income increased in all regions. In particular, the Red River Delta, North Central and Central Coast regions increased the most, reaching 7.3 million VND per month, up 11.7% over the same period last year.
Some localities recorded high increases such as Vinh Phuc 9.9 million VND per month, an increase of 1 million; Hung Yen 9.2 million, an increase of 949,000 VND; Hai Duong 8.8 million, an increase of 841,000 VND; Thanh Hoa 7.8 million, an increase of 1.1 million VND; Nghe An 7.2 million, an increase of 1.4 million; Quang Binh 7 million, an increase of 871,000 VND.
By economic sector, service workers still have the highest income, reaching 9.9 million VND per month, an increase of 832,000 VND compared to the same period last year; agriculture, forestry and fishery 4.9 million VND, an increase of 434,000 VND; industry and construction 9.1 million VND, an increase of 690,000 VND.
Some economic sectors recorded a good income compared to the same period last year, such as production and distribution of electricity, gas, hot water, and steam reaching 12.3 million VND, an increase of 1.2 million VND; processing and manufacturing industry 9.1 million, an increase of 667,000 VND; finance, banking, and insurance activities 13.9 million, an increase of 800,000 VND.
