For the first time, Vietnamese students won second prize in the International Science and Technology Competition, the highest in 12 years of participation.
The winners were Nguyen Le Quoc Bao and Le Tuan Hy, 12th graders at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City. They brought to the competition the project "Integrated deep learning software to segment and reconstruct monolithic heart structures in simulated 3D space for medical practice applications", in the System Software category.
"This is the highest prize that Vietnamese students have achieved after 12 years of participating in the International Science and Technology Competition," the Ministry of Education and Training said on the morning of May 18. In previous years, Vietnamese students' projects often won secondary prizes, and last year there was a third prize.
In addition to this award, Bao and Hy's project also received a Special Award from the American Association for Information Technology.
The 74-year-old International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is the world's largest science competition for high school students (grades 9-12). To participate in ISEF, contestants must pass local or national competitions.
This year, the competition attracted nearly 1,700 students from 67 countries, competing from May 11 to 17. The total number of projects was 1,353, in 21 fields. About 25% of these were awarded prizes.
The Vietnamese delegation has 9 projects from students in Tuyen Quang, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Tri, Lam Dong, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi Pedagogical University.
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong assessed that the contest is not only an opportunity for students to shine but also an opportunity to exchange and introduce Vietnamese history and culture to international friends.
According to the ministry's regulations, students who win prizes are considered for direct admission to university.
