On September 15, the Hawaii state government (USA) adjusted down the number of victims killed in last month's wildfire disaster to 97 people, instead of the previously announced number of 115 people.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green said that through screening the bodies, scientists determined that 97 people died in Lahaina.
In addition, the number of people who are somewhere undetermined, including those reported missing and those who are not among the dead or whose safety is not confirmed, is currently around 31 people.
The Hawaii wildfires that broke out on August 8 were the deadliest in the United States in over 100 years. The disaster burned down over 800 hectares of forest, wiping the historic city of Lahaina off the map. The wildfires, combined with strong winds, spread so quickly that many people had no time to escape. Many had to abandon their cars and jump into the ocean to escape as they tried to leave the city. Damages are estimated at nearly $6 billion, while recovery work will take a long time.
