South Korea launches first nanosatellite into Earth orbit

Weighing less than 100 kg, NEONSAT-1 is the first of 11 nanosatellites forming a satellite constellation to monitor and photograph the Korean Peninsula and surrounding seas.

A South Korean nanosatellite has been launched into Earth orbit as part of a national project to create a satellite constellation by 2027, the Ministry of Science and ICT said on April 24.

According to the announcement of the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea, the satellite named NEONSAT-1 is the first satellite of the NEONSAT project (full name is the New Space Earth Observation Satellite Constellation project for national security).

The satellite was launched from Rocket Lab's spaceport in Mahia (New Zealand) at around 10:08 a.m. on April 24 (local time), or around 3:38 a.m. the same day Seoul time.

Weighing less than 100kg, NEONSAT-1 is the first of 11 nanosatellites forming a satellite constellation to monitor and photograph the Korean Peninsula and surrounding seas.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea, the country continues to plan to launch five more nanosatellites into space in June 2026 and five more satellites in September 2027.
