South Korea, the United States and Japan conducted their first trilateral exercise in 2025 involving B-1B bombers, F-15K and F-2 fighters.
According to Yonhap news agency, the South Korean Defense Ministry announced on January 15 that South Korea, the United States and Japan conducted a joint air exercise with the participation of at least one B-1B bomber. This is the first trilateral exercise this year.
Also participating in the exercise were South Korean F-15K and Japanese F-2 fighters.
The South Korean Defense Ministry stressed that the latest exercise was held to enhance joint response to threats.
The ministry stated that South Korea, the US and Japan will continue to expand trilateral exercises on the basis of close cooperation.
In an effort to strengthen their joint defense capabilities, the South Korean and US Air Forces conducted their first separate live-fire air exercise this year.
On the same day, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) of South Korea announced that it has launched a project to renovate a 4,400-ton Navy warship using domestic technology to improve fleet operational efficiency.
A meeting to discuss details of the upgrade of the Chungmugong-class destroyer Yi Sun-sin took place at the office of defense company Hanhwa Systems in Gumi, 233km southeast of Seoul.
Under the plan, DAPA will equip the warship with an indigenous combat system as well as upgraded towed array sonar and guided missiles to enhance anti-submarine and air defense capabilities. DAPA expects the upgrades to enable more efficient operation and maintenance of the warship.
Commissioned in 2003, this destroyer is considered an important asset of the South Korean Navy.
