Hai Duong proactively responds to high level of saltwater intrusion

According to authorities, the salinity of water at sluice gates on the outer river in Hai Duong province has recently been high, at times exceeding 11 times the permissible level.

To ensure safety in agricultural production and minimize damage caused by saltwater intrusion, on March 13, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Hai Duong province requested relevant agencies, units and People's Committees of districts, cities and towns to continue to strictly implement Official Dispatch No. 04/CD-TTg dated January 15, 2024 of the Prime Minister on proactively responding to the risk of drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion; Official Dispatch No. 668/UBND-VP dated March 10, 2023 of the Provincial People's Committee on responding to saltwater intrusion in Hai Duong province.

Bac Hung Hai Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd. and Hai Duong Province Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd. proactively monitor saline intrusion, control salinity when operating the irrigation system, and dredge and clear the flow to protect production, especially for crops and aquatic products.

The People's Committees of Tu Ky, Thanh Ha, Kim Thanh districts and Kinh Mon town closely coordinate with units operating irrigation works to regularly monitor the status of saltwater intrusion, and direct the organization of irrigation works exploitation in the area. Identify water intake sluices that are likely to be affected by saltwater intrusion to proactively operate and control saltwater intrusion; develop a plan to respond to saltwater intrusion.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hai Duong closely monitors, forecasts, and warns of the effects of saltwater intrusion. Directs production in accordance with water resources such as technical guidance, seasons, crop varieties, aquaculture... to adapt to saltwater intrusion.

According to Hai Duong Province Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd., due to proactive monitoring and control of salinity, and not opening sluices to take water from the river into the fields when the salinity exceeds the allowable threshold, up to this point, no rice or crop areas have been affected.

The salinity of water measured at Quy Cao Bridge (Tu Ky) at 7:00 a.m. on March 9 was 11.23‰, 11 times higher than the allowable level (1‰); at Ba Nha Hydrological Station (Thanh Ha) at 6:00 a.m. on March 8 it was 3.1‰; at Cau Xe sluice (Tu Ky) at 7:00 a.m. on March 4 it was 9.3‰. The level of natural disaster risk due to saline intrusion is level 1. The saline intrusion situation is likely to last throughout the dry season.
