Van Bach (No. 11) celebrates the opening goal in the 1-0 win over Japan on August 20 in the final round of the 2024 U16 Peace Cup friendly tournament in Liaoning province, China.

The only goal of the match was scored by Nguyen Van Bach in the 16th minute. After a pass from his teammate, the PVF striker rushed in and shot with his left foot, defeating the Japanese goalkeeper.

The unexpected goal forced Japan to push up their formation. However, coach Nozomi Hiroyama and his team could not penetrate Vietnam's well-organized and aggressive defense.

It was not until the 83rd minute that they created a truly dangerous opportunity, from a direct free kick. However, goalkeeper Hoa Xuan Tin still played with concentration, flying to block the ball to preserve the score. This was the first time a Vietnamese team had defeated Japan, since the 2018 Asian Games.

In the match that took place on the same day, host China defeated Uzbekistan 2-1 to win the championship. They have the same six points as Vietnam, but are ranked higher thanks to a better goal difference (+4 compared to 0). In the previous two matches, Vietnam lost to China 0-4 and won Uzbekistan 3-0.
