Scottie Scheffler was arrested by police outside the Valhalla stadium gates after misunderstanding a traffic signal following a fatal accident nearby.
On the morning of May 17, Kentucky time (USA), when the PGA Championship was about to enter round 2, Louisville city police closed the road in front of Valhalla stadium to handle the scene of a bus hitting and killing John Mills, a sales partner for the tournament's Organizing Committee.
The police report said Scheffler drove near the main gate of the tournament at 6:12 a.m. and due to heavy traffic, the American golfer was preparing to turn onto another road. Seeing this, Inspector Bryan Gillis stopped Scheffler's car to give specific instructions, but the subject did not cooperate and accelerated, causing Gillis to be dragged on the road, causing swelling and abrasions to his left wrist and knee.
ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington witnessed the entire incident. He said Scheffler's car stopped right in front of the stadium gate as Gillis tried to cling to the vehicle.
Gillis then yelled at Scheffler to get out of the car. He was handcuffed as soon as he got out. Scheffler was taken to the police station on charges of reckless driving, resisting arrest, and causing injury to a law enforcement officer.
He was released after nearly 2.5 hours in detention and immediately spoke out about the incident. "This morning, I was following the police's orders. The situation was very chaotic due to the previous fatal accident. I misunderstood the request, leading to the incident, but I did not mean to ignore it. I also express my condolences to the unfortunate victim who died," said the world's number one golfer.
The car crash that killed partner John Mills caused the 2024 PGA Championship to postpone Round 2. Thanks to that, Scheffler was still in time to compete. He returned to the par-71 Valhalla course, shot -5 for the second leg, thereby finishing T4 with a score of -9.
Above this level are Sahith Theegala -10, Collin Morikawa -11 and Xander Schauffele -12 respectively. The cut line is determined at -1, according to the principle of taking the top or T70. With that filter score, many stars or legends have stopped, such as Jon Rahm (even par), Matt Fitzpatrick (+1), Adam Scott (+3). Wyndham Clark (+4), Phil Mickelson (+4), Tiger Woods (+7). Yesterday, Woods entered the second round with a score of +1, and at the end of the match he scored +6 thanks to two triple bogeys, three bogeys and three birdies.
The 2024 PGA Championship concluded this morning with the 27-pound Wanamaker Trophy and $3.33 million going to Schauffele. The 30-year-old golfer set a winning mark of -21, setting a new record for championship points in the history of all four majors while his compatriot Bryson DeChambeau finished second (-20). Scheffler went from T4 (-9) after round 2 to T24 (-7) at the end of round 3. This morning, he scored -6 for the final round and finished T8 (-13).
