Since taking power in 2020, Mali’s military government has prioritized reestablishing sovereignty over all areas, and Kidal could become a key battleground. “We are only a few dozen kilometers from Kidal and we are continuing the process of securing the entire territory,” a Malian army officer confirmed. Local officials said many civilians had fled Kidal, fearing a prolonged conflict.

About 25,000 people live in the Kidal desert region, a key point on the road to Algeria and a historical hotbed of rebellion.

The United Nations has expressed concern over the military escalation in northern Mali amid the withdrawal of the UN peacekeeping mission - MINUSMA from the country.

Mali's military took power by force in 2020. In June this year, they asked MINUSMA to leave the country after months of deteriorating relations.

MINUSMA's departure from its bases has exacerbated the territorial struggle between armed groups in northern Mali, with mainly Tuareg separatist groups resuming hostilities against the state in the centre, while the Al-Qaeda-linked "Supporters of Islam and Muslims" (GSIM) militant group has increased attacks on military positions.
