Impersonating bank employees to defraud hundreds of millions of dong

On November 28, the Investigation Security Agency of Gia Lai Province Police issued a decision to prosecute and arrest Nguyen Thi Thu Nga (25 years old, residing in Phu Hoa district, Phu Yen province) and Tran Thi Thanh Thao (26 years old, residing in Tay Hoa district, Phu Yen province) to investigate the act of fraud and appropriation of property.

Previously, on July 25, Gia Lai Provincial Police received a complaint from Ms. PTLQ (residing in Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province) reporting that a subject impersonating a VPBank employee had defrauded her of 80 million VND.

Through investigation, Gia Lai Provincial Police determined that Nguyen Thi Thu Nga committed the above act.

Expanding the investigation, Gia Lai Provincial Police determined that Nga also cooperated with Tran Thi Thu Thao to appropriate property of many other people using the same method.

According to the initial investigation, from March 2023 to July 25, Nga and Thao used many unregistered phone numbers to pretend to be VPBank employees to call many people using credit cards, using reasons such as: consulting and supporting cash conversion with low interest rates, increasing credit card limits or supporting, collecting annual fees to collect information on credit cards (including 16 embossed numbers, full name, expiration date, 3 CVV numbers).

After having the information, Nga and Thao used this information to pay for a phone card purchase on e-commerce sites Lazada and Shoppe and continued to call and trick the victim into reading the OTP code sent by the bank to pay for this transaction.

Using the above tricks, Nga and Thao defrauded and appropriated more than 570 million VND.

The Gia Lai Provincial Police Investigation Security Agency announced and requested that any victim contact this agency to report and receive instructions on how to handle the matter in accordance with the law.
