The world-famous Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Fishing Festival 2025, one of Korea's most popular winter events, closed with a record 1.86 million visitors, breaking the 1.84 million mark set in 2019.
Yonhap news agency quoted the organizers' announcement on February 2 saying that the festival opened on January 11 in Hwacheon, a remote mountain town in Gangwon Province, South Korea.
The unique festival taking place on a frozen river not only attracted a large number of locals but also welcomed 122,000 international visitors, a sharp increase compared to last year's figure of 85,000.
Launched in 2003, the festival was selected as a national event in 2010 by the Korean Ministry of Culture and has grown into one of the world's four major winter festivals.
