During the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday (from the 29th to the 5th day of the Lunar New Year), Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) has ensured safe and stable electricity supply to serve people nationwide.

According to data from the National Power System Control Center, during the Tet holiday, the highest average daily power consumption of the entire national power system was only about 27,026 MW, with average daily power consumption at about 490.1 million kWh/day.

Statistics show that electricity consumption nationwide during the 2024 Lunar New Year decreased by 31.7% compared to normal days of the week before Tet. However, the average daily electricity consumption during the 2024 Lunar New Year was 11.2% higher than the same period during the 2023 Lunar New Year.

As predicted, the national electricity demand during the Lunar New Year has decreased significantly compared to normal days. According to actual statistics, during the Giap Thin Tet holiday, the national load capacity during off-peak hours decreased to just over 14,900 MW, equivalent to about 60% compared to normal days.

With low electricity consumption during the Tet holiday, many types of power sources are forced to reduce generation to match the load demand. In fact, for the current power system, to ensure safe and stable operation of the power system, the National Power System Control Center is required to maintain a number of traditional power generators (such as coal-fired thermal power, gas turbines, hydropower, etc.) at a minimum level to ensure inertia and stability for the power system as well as have enough reserve capacity in case of power source failures or unusual fluctuations in actual operation. Therefore, when the load consumption capacity drops too low, traditional sources have stopped/reduced generation to the technical limit but the total generation capacity still exceeds the consumption demand, leading to the mandatory requirement to adjust and reduce the mobilized capacity from all types of power sources, including renewable energy sources (such as small hydropower, solar power, wind power) to ensure safe operation of the national power system.

Thanks to proactively and promptly informing and warning about security and safety issues in operating the power system before and during Tet, and thanks to the active coordination of power source and grid operators, the National Power System Dispatch Center said that during the recent Tet holiday of Giap Thin 2024, power source investors (including rooftop solar power) basically complied with the dispatch orders, thereby contributing to ensuring the safe operation of the national power system, without causing incidents and affecting power supply.

Thanks to the proactive preparation of EVN and its member units on detailed plans to ensure safe and stable power supply, enhanced on-call organization, ready human resources, means, materials and equipment to handle incidents and prevent fires and explosions, during the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday, power plants and the entire transmission and distribution grid system have basically operated safely and stably.

Due to the low load characteristics during the Tet holiday, the voltage of regional power systems and the 500 kV system increased, so the National Power System Dispatch Center and regional Power System Dispatch Centers coordinated the separation of some high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage lines from operation to ensure that the voltage of the entire system is within the allowable limit, meeting the requirements for safe operation. A few incidents occurred on the distribution grid due to people violating the grid safety corridor (such as flying kites, balloons, shooting tinsel...) on the lines, which were promptly handled by the on-duty forces, restoring power supply as soon as possible.

During the recent Tet holiday, there were no electrical work accidents or electrical fires. In addition, all units in EVN have strictly implemented disease prevention measures in accordance with the instructions of the authorities.
