Ankaragucu club president arrested for violent behavior towards referee during Turkish national championship match.

The referee assault on December 11 shocked Turkish football. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc immediately condemned the incident and ordered investigations and prosecution. On Twitter, Yilmaz Tunc said the referee attacker had been arrested.

The most violent moment in Turkish football took place during the match between Ankaragucu and Rizespor. Ankaragucu led Rizespor for most of the match but were equalized in the seventh minute of stoppage time. Fans of the home team invaded the pitch after the referee blew the final whistle. The president of Ankaragucu was also not calm.

Ankaragucu club president Faruk Koca ran onto the pitch and punched referee Halil Umut Meler in the face after the match ended. Meler collapsed on the pitch. Television footage later showed Meler's left eye was swollen shut.

"All those who entered the pitch after the Ankaragucu vs Rizespor Super League match on December 11, 2023 and committed acts of violence against the referee, as well as the fans who invaded the pitch afterwards, were found to have violated Law No. 6222 on the Prevention of Violence and Riots in Sports under the Turkish Criminal Code," Mr. Yilmaz Tunc said.

The Turkish Justice Minister specifically mentioned three characters by their initials FK, SYS and KC. FK is said to be Faruk Koca - the person who assaulted referee Halil Umut Meler, causing a facial fracture and requiring hospitalization. Mr. Yilmaz Tunc said that this was enough to constitute the crime of "intentionally causing injury and threatening a person on duty".

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) used very strong words to condemn Mr. Faruk Koca's actions. They called it a "despicable crime".

"This inhuman and cowardly attack was carried out against all stakeholders of Turkish football. All those who target referees and encourage crimes against referees are complicit in this cowardly crime," the TFF said in a statement, vowing to impose the heaviest possible sanctions.

The Turkish national championship was postponed indefinitely after this violent moment.
