Cori Gauff made a stunning comeback to defeat Aryna Sabalenka in the final to win the 2023 US Open, setting a new record.
Cori Gauff has become the 2023 US Open champion after a convincing victory over Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
Gauff successfully came back from behind to defeat the new WTA world number 1 after three sets with a score of 2-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
Cori Gauff makes history
This victory helped American tennis player Cori Gauff win the first prestigious Grand Slam title of her career.
Previously, she reached the final of the 2022 Roland Garros tournament but lost quickly to former world number 1 Iga Świątek.
By winning the USD Open, Cori Gauff also made history as the first American teenager to win a Grand Slam in the 21st century.
The last time an American teenager won a Grand Slam was Serena Williams at the US Open in 1999, when she was just 17.
Additionally, Gauff became the fourth youngest American to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era (since 1968), joining Chris Evert, Tracy Austin and Serena Williams.
Cori Gauff also ended the "thirst" for the US Open title that Americans had been waiting for for 6 years since Sloane Stephens won the 2017 final.
With the win, Cori Gauff will earn 1,570 points, moving her up to No. 3 in the WTA rankings (which will be officially announced next Monday). She and her doubles partner Jessica Pegula will also be the world No. 1 (women's doubles).
This is a worthy reward for this 19-year-old girl after she has achieved extremely impressive results in recent times.
With what she has shown, Cori Gauff is expected to continue to reap new successes in the future.
As for Aryna Sabalenka, losing in the 2023 US Open final was extremely regrettable, especially when she was showing great form in this tournament.
Impressive comeback
Even in the final, Sabalenka had a more impressive start when she convincingly won 6-2 in the first set after earning 3 breaks.
However, in set 2, Sabalenka made many mistakes when she had to fight hard with Gauff, before losing with a score of 3-6.
In the deciding set, Cori Gauff played with great excitement, continuously creating difficulties for her opponent and leading 4-0.
Sabalenka then calmly reduced the score to 2-4 but that was all the Belarusian wife could do before Gauff returned, winning two games to close the set with a score of 6-2.
Despite losing the final, Aryna Sabalenka will still be awarded 520 points to rise to the world No. 1 position (announced on September 11).
At the end of the match, teenage tennis player Cori Gauff could not hide her joy and happiness with the Grand Slam title of her career.
"The title means a lot to me," Cori Gauff said on the podium. "I feel a little shocked at this moment. Losing at Roland Garros was heartbreaking for me, but I realize that God puts you through suffering and trials, which makes this moment even sweeter than I could have imagined."
Cori Gauff added: "My dad used to take me to this tournament, sit in the stands and watch Venus Williams and Serena Williams play, so it's amazing to be here on this stage."
"Today was the first time I saw my dad cry. He didn't want me to tell you guys but he was caught on camera. Dad thinks he's so tough. Thank you for always believing in me from the start."
In the early morning of September 11, the 2023 US Open will enter its final matches, with the main focus being the match between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev in the men's singles final.
Before this final, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev had faced each other 14 times, with the Serbian having the upper hand with 9 wins. However, when the two players met in the 2021 US Open final, the Russian player won to become the champion.
In the upcoming encounter, can Daniil Medvedev continue his success to be crowned, or will Novak Djokovic win to claim the 24th Grand Slam title of his career?
