Cori Gauff wins US Open 2023, sets new record

Cori Gauff has become the 2023 US Open champion after a convincing victory over Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

Gauff successfully came back from behind to defeat the new WTA world number 1 after three sets with a score of 2-6, 6-3 and 6-2.

This victory helped American tennis player Cori Gauff win the first prestigious Grand Slam title of her career.

Previously, she reached the final of the 2022 Roland Garros tournament but lost quickly to former world number 1 Iga Świątek.

By winning the USD Open, Cori Gauff also made history as the first American teenager to win a Grand Slam in the 21st century.

The last time an American teenager won a Grand Slam was Serena Williams at the US Open in 1999, when she was just 17.

Additionally, Gauff became the fourth youngest American to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era (since 1968), joining Chris Evert, Tracy Austin and Serena Williams.

Cori Gauff also ended the "thirst" for the US Open title that Americans had been waiting for for 6 years since Sloane Stephens won the 2017 final.

With the win, Cori Gauff will earn 1,570 points, moving her up to No. 3 in the WTA rankings (which will be officially announced next Monday). She and her doubles partner Jessica Pegula will also be the world No. 1 (women's doubles).
