On the morning of June 21 (Vietnam time), the opening ceremony of the 2024 Copa America took place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, USA, right before the opening match between Argentina and Canada.
The host country, the United States, held a vibrant and colorful ceremony with performances by Feid Ferxxo, a Colombian artist who has won many Grammy awards, and famous singer Shakira, who sang the official song of the award, titled "Punteria." Shakira is the artist who performed the theme song Waka Waka at the 2010 World Cup.
The opening ceremony took place in front of more than 71,000 spectators, marking nearly a month of competition between 16 teams from two confederations: the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) and the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Football (CONCACAF).
The CONMEBOL President said that since the birth of Copa America, the organizing committee has always focused on attracting and supporting famous artists like Feid Ferxxo, who represent the passion and dedication of the South American people, thereby making Copa America a vibrant, unforgettable tournament where all fans can feel the greatness of football in the region.
Being held in the US, Copa America 2024 is considered a dress rehearsal for the co-host country of the 2026 World Cup, before the biggest football event on the planet 2 years later.
Immediately after the opening ceremony, defending champion Argentina and CONCACAF representative Canada officially entered the opening match in Group A of Copa America 2024.
Within the framework of the tournament, the teams will be divided into 4 groups, competing in a round robin to calculate rankings. The top two teams in each group will advance to the quarter-finals.
The knockout rounds (quarter-finals, semi-finals and third-place play-off) will have no extra time and any draws will be decided by penalty shoot-outs. In the final, if the two teams are tied after 90 minutes, extra time will be played.
