Thanh Mien District Police (Hai Duong) have proactively grasped the situation, promptly investigated and handled many crimes in cyberspace.
Interprovincial fraud
During April and May 2024, Le Kim Loan, born in 2002 in Thanh Chieu village, Phu Cuong commune, Ba Vi district (Hanoi) used Facebook to create several accounts such as Apple Khoa, Khoa Apple, Apple Hoang Chung... and joined the group "Free phone giveaway". Loan posted articles with pictures with the content of giving away free phones to those in need in the group.
On May 7, 2024, Le Kim Loan used the Apple Khoa account to get acquainted and promised to give a free phone to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Nam, born in 1995, Dong village, Thanh Tung commune (Thanh Mien). After exchanging information, he fell into the trap and Loan took 2 million VND.
The very next day, Loan continued to use the above Facebook account to make friends, promised to give a free phone to Mr. Nguyen Quoc Anh, born in 2006 in Doan Ket village, Hong Phong commune (Thanh Mien) and took 800,000 VND from Mr. Quoc Anh.
Loan's trick is to pretend to give away a phone but ask the victim to transfer certain fees such as "invoice", "authentication documents", "warranty card", "delivery fee" to appropriate money.
After grasping the situation and investigating, Thanh Mien District Police identified the fraudster and arrested and prosecuted Le Kim Loan for fraud and property appropriation.
Also caught in an online scam, in April 2024, Mr. Tran Van G., born in 1994 in Phuong Khe village, Chi Lang Bac commune (Thanh Mien) used the Facebook account "Tran Giang" to join the group "Wholesale and retail of rechargeable fans - all kinds of electric fans at the factory".
While participating in the group, Mr. G. saw an account named “Gia Dung Quang Tiep” posting an article about selling rechargeable fans, so he exchanged messages and transferred more than 3.3 million VND to buy 10 rechargeable fans. After transferring the money, Mr. G. did not receive the fans as ordered and was blocked from all contact.
After many days of investigation, Thanh Mien District Police identified the fraudster as Tran Van Tien, born in 1997 in Ninh Quy 2 village, Phuoc Son commune, Ninh Phuoc district (Ninh Thuan) and arrested and prosecuted him for fraud and property appropriation.
Currently, the above case is continuing to be investigated by Thanh Mien District Police, the number of victims of Tien is up to nearly 40 people in many provinces and cities across the country with the amount of money embezzled in the hundreds of millions of Dong.
Anyone can be a victim.
Along with the above cases, the district police force has recently clarified a number of online fraud and extortion cases. According to the Criminal Police, Economic and Drug Police Team of Thanh Mien District Police, with complicated developments and many sophisticated tricks, anyone can become a victim of cybercrime.
At the end of 2023, the District Police Investigation Agency prosecuted a subject for extortion. This subject took advantage of the leak of sensitive images of a girl born in 2010 in Chi Lang Nam commune (Thanh Mien) to ask the girl to transfer 25 million VND. The reason this girl's sensitive images were leaked was that she shared an iCould account with a friend.
Most recently, on November 6, 2024, Thanh Tung Commune Police promptly helped a citizen in La Xa village, Thanh Tung commune (Thanh Mien) stop transferring 100 million VND to a fraudster. This woman was called by a subject impersonating a police officer who said that she was involved in a drug trafficking, money laundering, and law violation ring and was borrowing 28 billion VND from Bac A Bank. Therefore, Ms. T. had to transfer 100 million VND to the account provided by the subject to resolve the matter.
According to the police, investigating and arresting criminals in cyberspace takes a lot of time, money and effort. This type of crime has many methods and tricks. The main trick is to exploit the gullibility and greed of some people to set traps. If people are not vigilant, they will easily fall into the trap.
The district police are closely coordinating with the Center for Culture, Sports and Communications to disseminate weekly information about the methods and tricks of cyber fraudsters to warn people. At the same time, they regularly maintain and mobilize cadres, party members and people to proactively prevent, detect, stop and raise vigilance against all types of crimes.
Mr. Tran Huu Trinh, Director of the Center for Culture, Sports and Communications of Thanh Mien district, said that the unit maintains the column For National Security every Wednesday. In it, it promotes propaganda about the methods and tricks of all types of crimes, especially crimes in cyberspace. The programs are broadcast to all communes and towns in the district. Thanks to that, people have a better understanding of the tricks of bad guys to avoid them.
Recently, Hai Duong Provincial Police warned that in Hai Duong, there are scams through Zalo, Facebook, Telegram, and Viber.
The subjects using images are mainly women who text the victims to get acquainted and then fraudulently collect images and personal information; using cutting and editing technology to create sensitive images and videos.
They then called, emailed, and texted, claiming to be "detectives" who had collected sensitive information from the victims, threatening them and demanding that they transfer money or their sensitive messages and photos would be made public. Due to fear and shame, many victims transferred money.
