Many people experience dizziness and fear that they have a dangerous disease.

Dizziness often occurs in people over 40 years old.

Dizziness is not a disease but a symptom caused by many reasons. There are many different types of dizziness described by patients, which are divided into the following 4 types:

Rotational vertigo (true vertigo): An illusion of spinning movement while the body is completely still compared to the surrounding environment, causing discomfort. The patient feels as if our body is spinning or the objects around us are spinning.

Dizziness: Feeling lightheaded, body swaying when sitting or standing still.

Fainting: The patient feels dizzy or about to faint.

Loss of balance: Feeling unsteady on one's feet, staggering, or losing one's balance.

Dizziness is a common symptom, with the frequency of visits with this symptom ranging from 5 to 10% of all visits. This symptom can occur at any age, but is most common in middle-aged and elderly people (> 40 years old).

When dizziness occurs, the patient may experience the following symptoms:

  • Loss of balance
  • Spinning, tilting
  • Pulled in one direction
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Blurred vision, dizziness
  • Tinnitus, hearing loss
  • Abnormal eye movements or nystagmus
  • Sweating, changes in pulse - blood pressure
  • Mentally impaired or unstable

What age group is dizziness common in?

Dizziness usually occurs in the elderly, but this condition is increasingly becoming younger. Most cases of dizziness are benign, but there are also hidden risks behind it that affect the health and life of the patient.

People at high risk of dizziness include:

Senior Citizen

The elderly have a fairly high rate of vestibular disorders, because when people reach an age, their bodies begin to age and some organs begin to lose function.

Recent epidemiological studies estimate that 35-40% of people aged 40 and older have experienced some episodes of vertigo. For people aged 65 and older, this rate may increase to 50-60%.

Nearly 8 million American adults have chronic conditions. Worse, more than half of all accidental deaths in older adults after the age of 70 are due to problems related to falls, dizziness, and balance problems.

In Vietnam, the situation is similar, the number of people with the syndrome is increasing and getting younger.

Working in a stressful environment

High-pressure work environments, frequent stress or unscientific living habits also pose high risks.

Stress causes the body to produce large amounts of the hormone cortisol, which causes a series of diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, damage to the nervous system, including the eighth nerve, the autonomic nervous system, and disorders of the vestibular system. Therefore, the rate of disease in office workers and intellectual workers is increasing.

Pregnant women, premenopausal

Pregnant women often suffer from morning sickness leading to loss of appetite, especially in the first 3 months, the body is not provided with enough nutrition, causing pregnant women to feel dizzy and lightheaded.

During pregnancy or pre-menopause, women's psychology and physiology change a lot. They are often irritable, anxious, negative, suspicious, and angry for no reason. The reason why their psychology becomes so erratic is because the amount of female hormones in the body changes suddenly, causing dizziness.

Treatment for vertigo depends on the cause. In many cases, vertigo usually goes away on its own without treatment because the brain can adapt and adjust to changes in the vestibular system to maintain balance. However, for some people, medication or surgery is required to completely treat the condition, such as a tumor or injury to the brain or neck.

People experiencing dizziness should see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
