The US Air Force has conducted a historic test flight of an AI-powered F-16, called Vista.

Business Insider (USA) reported that the test flight was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, with Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall himself sitting in the cockpit. According to US media, Vista has made about 20 flights since testing began in September 2023. In some situations, it even performed better than the pilot.

During the May 3 flight, Vista “nearly came head-to-head” with a human-piloted F-16 as they flew within 1,000 feet of each other at 550 mph.

As many humanitarian groups express deep concerns about placing life-and-death decisions in the hands of an AI-powered machine, Mr. Kendall stressed that AI is restructuring global war strategies, whether we like it or not.

“Not having AI would be a security risk,” Air Force Secretary Kendall told the Associated Press after landing. “At this point, we need to own it.”

The US Air Force is betting big on AI, investing in a fleet of 1,000 drones to perform riskier maneuvers than manned aircraft, the first of which will be operational in 2028, according to AP.
