By page163, a man living in Jiangxi, China, has had trouble with his half-Chinese, half-Western name. His name is Zhao C.

Origin of the name

When naming their children, parents often put a lot of hope in them. Zhao C's father, Zhao Zhirong, is no exception. After finishing school, he worked hard to support his family, but life was not easy.

He hoped that his son would not be like him, living a rich life, so he wanted to give his son a special name. So, he thought of a way to combine Chinese and English characters. He hoped that his son could follow the trend of the times and be exposed to more Western languages.

Zhao Zhirong had high hopes for his son, hoping that he could go abroad, travel and broaden his mind, explore new places, and live a colorful life. However, he did not expect that his son would get into trouble because of his unique name.

Police asked Zhao C to change his name

Zhao C was in his third year of college when China rolled out its new identity cards. He had used the same name for more than 20 years and had never felt any different.

But when he went to the police station to get an ID card like everyone else, he was told that he could not get one. It turned out that his name had the letter C, which could not be entered into the police computer system.

The police informed Zhao C that his name needed to be changed before he could re-enter the system for registration and identity verification. This puzzled him. Apparently, this name had not caused him any trouble for more than 20 years.

Moreover, his name was given to him by his father, and it had a special meaning. He was shocked when he was suddenly asked to change his name. The police also made it clear that this was mandatory, and if he did not change it, he would not be able to get an ID card.

In the past, few people sued the police station in court. Therefore, the police station in Yuehu, Yingtan City and the name Zhao C immediately attracted everyone's attention.

The court, based on the right of citizens to name themselves, ordered the Yuehu police station to issue a new ID card to Zhao C. The police station objected, as the computer system did not allow for verification and processing.

This is not something that the Yuehu police can handle. Because of such contradictions, the case becomes more complicated and attracts the attention of society.

Finally, after many mediations, the police in Yuehu reported the case to their superiors. The result was still that Zhao C had to change his name, and the police would immediately issue an ID card.

Rules regarding names

In fact, there are many interesting surnames in China, such as Ji. People often think that this surname only exists in the past or in movies, but today many people have this surname.

There are also many people who, because of their special names, have received excessive attention from classmates, colleagues and people around them, and have even been ridiculed by others.

However, a person’s name often represents the care and blessings of elders. Therefore, it cannot be used to mock or insult. Chinese law stipulates that every citizen has the right to decide and use his or her own name and also has the right to ask others to respect his or her name.

In Zhao C's case, he chose to change his name after consultation.
