Some Arsenal players had just finished playing in the Carabao Cup on the night of September 25, only had time to go home to sleep and then go to school in the morning.
The victory over Bolton in the English League Cup (Carabao Cup) in the early morning of September 26 (Vietnam time) witnessed the marks of Arsenal players. The Spanish coach put 8 players under 19 years old on the registration list. Of which, 4 players played from the start: Ethan Nwaneri (born in 2007), Joshua Nichols (born in 2006), Myles Lewis-Skelly (born in 2006) and Jack Porter (born in 2008).
At the post-match press conference, coach Arteta revealed that these players had to go home immediately after the match to prepare for school the next morning.
"Some of the boys have to go to school the next day. They'll have some great things to tell their friends, we just blew the game away. It's all great moments," said coach Arteta.
Ethan Nwaneri was the Gunners' standout young player. He scored two goals to help Arsenal lead Bolton 3-0. This midfielder is highly regarded among the group of young players who have been training regularly with their seniors since last season. Nwaneri's chances of playing against mid-table teams are very bright.
"Everyone has been waiting for Nwaneri to shine for a long time. He is an important part of the team and will have more opportunities to play in the future. Nwaneri is a talented player. He is very focused and has the necessary confidence. I am impressed with the way Nwaneri always knows what to do on the pitch," Arteta praised his student.
Ethan Nwaneri was born on March 21, 2007 and is currently 17 years old. However, he was not the youngest player to play for Arsenal last night. That achievement belongs to goalkeeper Jack Porter, born on July 15, 2008.
He became the youngest player to start for Arsenal at the age of 16 years and 72 days. This record was previously held by Cesc Fabregas (16 years and 177 days), set in October 2003, nearly 21 years ago.
"When I was 16, I lived on my own in Barcelona, playing at La Masia. I only trained with the B team and had a little bit of time with the first team. I wasn't thrown into the field like Jack Porter was at 16.
"He trained with the team in pre-season. I know what he can do. Porter has a lot of experience at youth level with the national team. I believe it was the right choice to start Porter," Arteta said.
In addition to the four under-19 players in the starting lineup, Ismeal Kabia (born in 2005) and Maldini Kacurri (born in 2005) were also brought onto the field in the second half of the win over Bolton.
Coach Arteta will have more opportunities to test the squad in the matches against Southampton (October 5) or Bournemouth (October 19).
